MOIRA CASTELLANO
|
Born in Diamante, Province of Entre Ríos. At the age of 5, Moira started her studies of Classical and Spanish dances. As a teenager, she moves with her family to the city of Rosario where she completes her studies in the Escuela Municipal de Danzas de Rosario.
She graduated in psychology from the Universidad Nacional de Rosario. At the age of 21, she takes her first class of tango with Orlando Paiva. Later on, she moves to Buenos Aires to study with the most prestigious teachers of the time: Eduardo Arquimbao, Roberto Herrera and Vanina Bilous, Gabriel Angio and Natalia Games, Gustavo Naveira, Fabian Salas, and others. From the beginnings of 2000, she lived in Paris where she danced with Quatre Arts company, directed by Catherine Berbesou, fusing contemporary dance with tango in the shows Valser, A fuego lento and Flor de Cactus, and touring some of the most prestigious contemporary dance festivals and theatres such as Théâtre de la ville de Paris. Besides that, she taught and helped to spread tango both in France and in many European cities. |
Together with Juanito Juárez, they toured with the electrotango band Gotan Project and danced, among other places, in El Palau de la Música in Barcelona, Roundhouse, or Shepherd Bush Empire in London.
She joined the Union Tanguera company, directed by Esteban Moreno and Claudia Codega, and their shows Proyecto Tango and Tango vivo, both staged in Dance Biennial in Lyon. Her tango partners include various renowned dancers, among others Pablo Inza, with whom she participated in a number of shows, including one the couple created specifically for an event in the Royal Palace of Queen Maxima in Amsterdam.
With Gaston Torelli, she participated in festivals in the US, Asia and Europe. She co-created and for 5 years co-directed the Misterio Tango Festival, which takes place in Buenos Aires every year in February, with more than 50 artists on stage and giving classes.
She attends some of the biggest national and international festivals with her partner Javier Rodríguez. Their experience and the quality of their dancing and teaching make them one the most renowned couples today.
Occasionally, she also gives shows and classes with Mariano Chicho Frumboli, another acclaimed dancer, with whom she has embarked on an artistic research into tango and theatre, opening space for new ways of expression.
Moira Castellano has been dancing tango for over 25 years and has become one of its key personalities globally.
“She is a dancer in whom the past meets with the present, the tradition with the search for what hasn’t been told yet. In her dance, the form and the personality of a woman acquire a new meaning, opening the doors to new generations of female dancers to explore communication and movement. Moira represents sensitivity, audaciousness, elegance and style. She can dance the uncertain walking through pain and disappointment, embracing the infinite hope for getting closer “
